There are some alarm clocks that work fine, but there are others that are really fabulous, and I'd say that the Sony ICF-C414 clock radio is one of those. But I want to share my I love this device so much and what it can offer you, if you ever plan to get it.
One look and I knew I wanted it - that's what I felt when I saw the ICF-C414. I love its adorable compactness and the nice black gloss finish it wears. Its unique "floating design" is probably a first, and it's very cute for me. The glass that's screwed onto its front elevates it a little, but the design isn't for aesthetics alone. It also serves as protection for the display. Very clever, Sony.
The buttons are very easy to use, and the device itself is simple and straightforward. No secrets, no complex functions, no unnecessary features - everything about this clock is simply useful.
It's never a problem to match the clock with any interior, the black finish works that out every time. It might be a little heavier than other models as it weighs 2.2 pounds, but it still has good compact dimensions of 7.5'' x 6.2'' x 3''. You can easily place it on any table top or bedside table.
The ICF-C414 boasts a 1.4'' green LED display that easily shows the time even at across the room. The brightness is also adjustable, so you won't hear any more problems regarding the "too dim" or "too bright" issues with other models. The LCD shows the setting of the clock, whether it's AM or PM, if it's daylight savings time, and if the alarms have been activated on the preset time. It even indicates if your batteries are running out, in the case of a power outage.
The radio is alright, but the analog tuner isn't. Some people wouldn't mind. In fact, I've heard some find it easy to tune in using this machine's tuner, but I really don't like turning the tuner from left to right just to find the perfect station. Good thing I know my frequency, and I stick to it so I just have to tune the radio once and it's all set.
The alarm is quite well, I wake up all the time. But if you find it too low volume, you have the option of turning it up to high. You can also set the alarm sounds to either buzzer or radio. The radio is my favorite, but one flaw about this machine is that you can't use the radio alarm for both alarms set. If you set the first alarm to radio, you have to set the second one to buzzer. I don't mind, I only use the second alarm for other appointments or weekends, anyway.
This device has an automatic time set feature which allows you to unplug it but still get the right time. It's also preset to the Eastern Standard Time so you just have to choose your time zone. The dual alarm setting makes it good for different schedules so you wouldn't have to worry about changing the alarm every night.
The snooze is also good for me, I get to sleep more without actually getting late. It's also easy to press the button because it's the largest one on the clock.
The back-up battery makes it perfect even when power outages occur. The battery lasts for as long as 250 days if the battery is Sony, but it's a good bargain of 30 days at least if not. You can travel with it and bring it on a road trip but not worry about its power going out.
It's not difficult to say that the Sony ICF-C414 is an excellent alarm clock radio that'll work for anyone. If you want an alarm clock that shows you the time at a good distance and sets your alarm precisely, I would highly recommend this model and I'd even give it a good 8 out of 10 for your reference.
